Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI)
The Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute was established in 2016 with the aim of meeting the demand for wheat and maize in Bangladesh, inventing high yielding wheat and maize varieties and innovating sustainable technologies. Its head office is in Dinajpur.
At present there are 11 research departments and 5 regional centers, 1 seed production center and 1 seed production sub-center. So far 33 varieties of wheat and 28 varieties of maize (18 varieties of barley hybrid maize, 6 varieties of barley maize, 1 variety of maize, 1 variety of maize, 1 variety of baby maize and 1 variety of sweet maize) have been developed in collaboration with Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.
Currently the most popular varieties of wheat are Bari wheat 25, Bari wheat 28, Bari wheat 30, Bari wheat 32 and Bari wheat 33. Bari wheat is cultivated by farmers in about 80 percent of the land in 33 countries. Bari wheat 33 variety is blast resistant, zinc rich and high yielding.
